Biotechnology M Tech
Department of Biotechnology has started M.Tech in Biotechnology from the academic year 2011-12 with an intake of 18. The program is approved by AICTE, Government of Karnataka and is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum. Life Sciences has recorded significant growth and Indian Biotech and Pharmaceutical companies have been making news globally for a wide range of innovative steps. Since last five to six years, several Indian Biotech companies have accomplished distinction as top global biotech companies and have been leaders for providing various services in BioPharma, Agribiotech, Bioinformatics, Clinical and Drug discovery sectors.
This course is a multidisciplinary program that focuses on several technological areas such as Fermentation technology, Animal and Plant Biotechnology, Probability theory and Computer Programming, Computational Biology, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, Computer Programming and Biostatistics. The electives offered are - Enzyme Technology, Data warehousing and Data mining, Genomics, Proteomics and Microarray, Environmental Biotechnology, Food Biotechnology, Molecular Modelling and Simulation, Tissue Engineering, Bioethics, Biosafety and IPR, Management, Entrepreneurship and Biobusiness, Clinical Biotechnology, Metabolic Engineering and Nanobiotechnology. Students get an opportunity to work in advanced research areas as Department has many funded projects from DBT, DST, KSCST, CMPDI, VTU, UGC and NRB.
Eligibility: Candidates who have acquired B.E./B.Tech degree in Biotechnology/ Chemical Engineering/Biomedical Engineering/Biochemical Engineering by securing not less than 50% marks in aggregate are eligible. However in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/Group 1 aggregate percent are marks obtained in qualifying examination and should not be less than 45%. The admissions are through central counselling on the basis of merit in PGCET or GATE. A few seats are also available under sponsored and Management quota. GATE qualified candidates are eligible for scholarship through AICTE.
Infrastructure : The Infrastructure for M.Tech Biotechnology includes Instrumentation /analysis and product recovery Lab, Fermentation Research Lab, Nano silk Lab, Animal Cell Culture Lab, Plant Tissue Culture Lab.
Areas of Research: The principal areas of research are hydrogen economy, membrane based separation techniques, plant tissue culture, crop management, molecular biology and genetic engineering and nanoparticles based applications, biofuels and renewable energy.
