Modern Biotechnology

Before going through with the traditional and modern biotech let's have a look at definition of Biotechnology:

>It is defined as the manufacturing of new products with the help of biological agents such as micro organisms.

or

>The process of use of biology in making new products for the benefits of the society is called as Biotechnology.

>The process of gene manipulation or genetic engineering to obtain the desired products is known as Biotechnology.

The term Biotechnology was point out by Karl Ereky in 1917.

Traditional Biotechnology:

>It refers to the use of micro organism in their natural state i.e. without gene alteration.

>It is also called as kitchen biotechnology as it is used mainly in making the fermented food products.

For example : Curd, bread etc.

Modern Biotechnology:

>When there is a alteration in genetic material of microbes for getting desired products, it is known as modern biotechnology.

>This technique is also called as genetic engineering or R-DNA Technology.
